THE ALASKAN ADVENTURE Day 60,61 & 62 July 14,15 & 16 2009 Haines, AK Day 1,2 &3

We are in Haines, Alaska and once again the sign was out to greet us.

We camped Monday night at Chilkoot State Park which is about 11 miles along the coast from downtown Haines. This is the nicest park we have been in since we arrived in Alaska and we are sorry that we didn't come out here first. It was well spaced with lots of trees and right on the water of Chilkoot Lake. We went for a walk in the morning and took some pictures of the area.

During our walk we followed the Chilkoot River for awhile and watched the salmon fishermen get in some last minute fishing. The run for this area is almost over as Chilkoot Lake is a spawning lake and a lot of the salmon have already reached the river.

Also on the river was a single walking bridge called a fish weir that had two counting stations. It was this guys job to count the fish coming up the river to spawn and then to count and measure the fry as they swim out to the ocean.

Not sure I could do his job.

This sign was posted at the end of the bridge with the recorded up to date count.

This is another type of counter on the Chilkat River. It snags the fish in the basket, records the count and lets the fish back into the water.

We stayed in the park as late as we could and then headed over to the RV park which is right in Portage Cove. Portage Cove is off of Lynn Canal which runs about 90 miles from the inlets of the Chilkat River south to Chatham Strait and Stephens Passage. At over 2,000 feet in depth, the Lynn Canal is the deepest fjord in North America and one of the deepest in the world as well.

The campsite we are staying at was picked for its view and it is a nice one. We are looking right across Portage Cove where it meets with the Lynn Canal.

We have not done too much the last two days as I am still fighting this bug. However I think I have the best of it and tomorrow we plan to get out and do a little exploring.
