THE ALASKAN ADVENTURE Day 92, 93 & 94 August 16, 17 & 18, 2009

Ahhh Starbucks!!!! Kathy’s Salvation. It’s raining and overcast a lot and we seem to be making a lot of trips to the Safeway Store. That’s where you will find the one and only Starbucks.

Actually the weather has not permitted us to do a lot. On Sunday we didn’t leave the campsite until the afternoon and all we did was go to the end of the road and watch the bears for awhile. I could sit there all day and watch them, I find them fascinating. Well, at least from a distance I find them fascinating. Up close and personal, hmmmm you had better ask Kathy.

When we returned to the campsite we were flagged down by the host of the campsite and we were invited to go over and share pizza and mushrooms. We gladly accepted and it was a fun night. We met some very nice people. Bill and Karen, a couple of educators from Minnesota who were also touring Alaska. Jacob Hoffman, who works for the forestry service and Kat Molter who is in Alaska for the summer working for Allen Marine. They are all interesting and very nice people and we thoughly enjoyed the evening.

I apologize to all in the picture for the poor quality. Still not sure how to do night photos.

Our camp hosts and hosts for the evening were Ron and Lisa Caffee who reside in Kentucky but are hosting the campsite at Ward Lake for the summer. They will be here until somewhere around the early part of September.

We had a fun evening and I was glad to meet two other marshmallow fanatics in Ron and Jacob. Ron has even perfected the ideal marshmallow roasting stick. I think he should patent it. A lot of marshmallows were consumed that night.

One thing when you are in the Tongass, when it gets dark, it gets really dark. When it came time to head back to our camper we had to have an escort with a light and Ron was happy to oblige.

Monday was a pretty laid back day. When we finally left the campsite we headed into town to pick up our mail which we had forwarded. After that we headed over to the local coffee shop and I spent the afternoon trying to catch up on the blog. I got a bunch done but am still behind. It was getting close to supper time and it was still raining so we headed back to the camper and had an early night.

Tuesday we woke up to more rain so we decided to head out to the RV Park and plug in for a night. Electricity can be a good thing at times. Also I wanted to get caught up on the blog before we headed to Prince Rupert. However before checked in we headed to the end of the road on the other side of the island. We wanted to do a little hiking and take in Lunch Falls ( no idea where the name came from ) as the pinks had just starting coming up river. It was pretty amazing to see not only the number of salmon starting up stream but the obstacles they had to overcome. If it wasn’t low water where they could hardly move or waterfalls that were pretty steep and fast, it was the fishermen, both man and bear.

When we tired of both hiking and watching the fish we headed for the RV park so that we could shower and get some blogging done. Well it turns out the Park wasn’t all that nice but they did have Wifi so we settled in and had an early supper. Then when I tried to log on I found out the Wifi wasn’t working well enough to do any serious blogging. So we watched a movie and called it a night.
