The Denali Highway was the original route to get to the park but it was used long before that. There are archaeological finds that actually shows that the highway was originally a trail used by the first inhabitants over 10,000 years ago. It was thought to be used as a trading trail by the first tribes.
The term highway is actually a gravel road for 106 miles with a wash board texture. The travel time was around 6 hours to travel the short distance but I must admit some of that time was stopping and talking pictures.
We saw just about every time of landscape there is in Alaska. Mountain, foothills, Tundra, Tiega forest and glaciers. The drive out on the 5th was cloudy and overcast and actually rained for some of the trip while the return trip on the 6th was a bright sunny day. It was like driving a different highway. A lot of the peaks we saw the second day did not even appear on the first day.
We camped the night at Tanglewoods River Campground which was free and had a nice BBQ'd meal and a walk around the area before calling it a night.
As we had not seen a lot of wildlife we decided to get up early and see if that would make a difference. It didn't but it was still a nice drive and we stopped after a couple of hours and had breakfast. I made toasted fried egg sandwiches by the side of the road that had a nice view into the valley below us.
We finished the drive in the early afternoon and headed for the park to check in.
Mount McKinley
We were lucky enough to get a good view of Mt. McKinley on our way back. It is only visable about 20% of the two and we have had to good views of it. It is quite spectacular.
