We arose early ( 5 AM by mistake) to get ready to head out down the George Parks Highway to Anchorage which was about 240 miles away. As I was outside getting things set up I was treated to the vision of 2 moose ( mother and yearling ) walking right through our camp. The calf looked at me for a few minutes before pushing on, I just stood there and enjoyed the moment. I did not even try to get my camera and take a picture.
It was a gorgeous day and we got away as fast as we could hoping that we could get a glimpse of Mt. McKinley before the clouds settled in. We were about 30 minutes into our drive when all of a sudden it appeared.
We were spell bound and it was all we could watch for the next 150 miles. We stopped often to take pictures and that is all we took pictures of. I cannot tell you what the rest of the drive looked like after we spotted the mountain.
In the picture above the mountain is about 65 miles away, the two peaks are actually two miles apart and the mountains in front of McKinley are about 10,000 ft high. It really brings into prespective just how big it is.
We continued on until we came to the cutoff for Talkeetna and we detoured into town to have a final look. Talkeetna is the starting point for climbers as well as most air tours of the mountain are based here. We took a few pictures and then headed for Anchorage.
We arrived on the 10th and spent the 11th getting groceries and hanging out. Also tried to plan rest of the trip and decided that we do not have enough time before the snow sets in. We will be leaving on the morning of the 12th.
