THE ALASKAN ADVENTURE Day 2 May 18,2009 Fort Nelson to Laird River

We didn’t get a real early start today but not to bad as we left Fort Nelson at around 10:30AM. We planned to do about 200 miles so we had lots of time. Shortly after leaving Fort Nelson we started to climb into the Rocky Mountains and we will travel through them all the way to Whitehorse. We spent the first part of the day looking at scenery that was mostly snow covered with the temperature fluctuating between 28 and 34 degrees F. Later in the afternoon the temperature went into the 40’s and the snow disappeared, hopefully until next winter.

The vistas in both the morning and afternoon were unbelievable and indescribable. The main problem was that the roads for most of the day were very curvy and there were no shoulders. This made picture taking very difficult as there was no place to pull off.

During today’s drive we passed Historic Milepost 392 which is Summit Pass and is the highest summit on the Alaska Highway at an elevation of 4250 feet. Summit Lake is still completely frozen over. Winter is real long here.

We continued our drive slowly as there was nobody on the roads ( Kathy says she called ahead ) and didn’t have to worry about holding up a bunch of traffic. The scenery all day was truly majestic. One of the nicest areas was Lake Muncho which was surprisingly still frozen over. You can see in the pictures that it is just started to break up.

The driving part of the day ended when we stopped at Laird River Campsite for the night. We decided to camp here and it is our first attempt at dry camping as they have no electricity or water hookups.

The main feature here is the hot springs and we went for a long soak. They have two pools here but we stayed in the nearest one as it was much hotter. The upper pool is usually closed due to bear activity.

We are now sitting outside at our campground waiting for supper to be ready. Actually I am sitting here doing this blog as Kathy is trying to get a fire going. Kathy did get the fire going and with the way she kept feeding it I think I may be married to a pyromaniac.

After supper we were enjoying the fire when a large moose ( aren't they all ) walked through the bush about 20 feet from us. We sat and watched as it stopped and fed for awhile before moving on.
Day 2 on our Alaska Adventure has been very satisfying.
