THE ALASKAN ADVENTURE Day 4 May 20, 2009 Teslin to Whitehorse, Yk

The day started off slow as we did not leave the campground in Teslin until noon. Our plans to go straight to Whitehorse were changed at the last minute as we decided to take a detour. We left the Alaska Highway at Jakes Corners and traveled up Hwy 6 until we reached Little Atlin Lake. The water was crystal clear and very cold. I just had to dip my toe in it.

After Little Atlin Lake we continued along Hwy 6 until we came to SNAFU Campgrounds. We just figured that was a sign to turn around, and we did. We doubled back until we reached Hwy 8 and turned south which would take us into Carcross. The road ( Hwy 8 ) was made to support the pipeline when it went through this area. It was a nice drive with some nice scenery but again difficult to stop and take pictures.

At Carcross we met up with the South Klondike Hwy and followed it back north to the Alaska Highway. During this part of the drive we came to Emerald Lake and you can see by the pictures that the mineral deposits in this area give the water a very green/teal looking color.

We left Emerald Lake and headed for Whitehorse and just after we entered the city limits we turned off for a quick look at Miles Canyon. This canyon was part of the water route to the gold fields and the narrow channel was followed by Whitehorse Rapids and Squaw Rapids. This resulted in many a miner not only losing his supplies but his life as well. The Canyon is much tamer today due to a Hydro Electric Dam built on the Yukon River at Whitehorse. The dam was built in 1959 which created Schwatka Lake.

We stopped for the night at the Mountain View RV park and are trying for an early start in the morning. We have a bunch of things planned but also want to get to Dawson City tomorrow.
I will let you know how we make out.
