THE ALASKAN ADVENTURE Day 112, 113 & 114 September 5,6 & 7, 2009 Watson Lake, YK to Fort Nelson, BC

We left Watson Lake on Saturday and headed for Liard River and the Liard Hot Springs. It wasn’t raining when we left Watson Lake but it was overcast and threatening to rain.

The drive to the hot springs wasn’t that far and we had made the same drive earlier in May when we were on our way to Alaska. Therefore we didn’t stop at any of the turn outs except for Whirlpool Canyon which we had missed the first time around. It was about 40 miles from Liard and when we got there we met a couple of guys from Germany, Han and Yurich. They were cycling from Anchorage, AK to Vancouver, BC. It was a very ambitious trip especially this late in the season. We chatted for awhile, wished them well and headed down the road.

The only other thing of any consequence we saw was this Wood Buffalo grazing at the side of the road. This big guy decided that he wanted to cross the road so we had to stop along with a couple of other vehicles. He certainly didn't look both ways.

Just before we got to the hot springs it started to rain and to top off the day we found out the park was full. However they allowed us to stay in the overflow parking for the night as they expected we would have no trouble getting a spot the next morning. So that is what we did. After getting settled we grabbed out suits and headed for the springs. It was about a half a mile walk along a boardwalk and they encouraged you to stay on the boardwalk for your own safety. Bear activity in the area was high. We had a good soak and even got someone to take our picture.

After over heating we headed back to the camper for a late supper and called it a night.

When we got up on Sunday it was still raining so we didn’t plan on doing much. We had breakfast and then went for a good long soak. It was quite enjoyable and different to sit in the hot springs while it was raining, at times fairly hard. We spent the rest of day just enjoying the rain. We did decide that if we woke up to rain on Monday then we were going to go for a quick soak and head off down the road. If it wasn’t raining then we planned to spend the day around the campfire.

Nice campsite, too bad it rained the whole time.

Imagine our surprise when we woke up Monday and it was raining. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise as September is the rainiest month in Northern BC. So we stuck to our plan and headed to the hot springs for a quick soak before we packed up and headed to Fort Nelson.

On the way back from the springs we ran into Hans and Yurich, the two German lads who were cycling to Vancouver. We stopped to chat and found out that they had just got to the camp the night before and everything they owned was soaked. They had been riding for the last two days in the rain. When we found out that they were stuck there until what they had dried we decided to try and help them. We packed everything they had into the back of the camper. We had to make their bikes smaller by removing wheels and handlebars but we got everything in. The guys had to sit at the booth in the back and hang on. I am sure it was not a very comfortable ride but they were grateful.

Shortly after leaving Liard Hot Springs we spotted this guy on the side of the road. I wonder if he works for Santa.

The scenery along this part of the Alaskan Highway is quite mountainous, not really all that high but mountains just the same. You could see where the tops were starting to get snow covered. It really was a nice setting however winter is not far off.

During the drive we came across a small herd of Buffalo and part of the herd were these two bulls. It looked like they might have a go but they just kept feinting at each other. We watched for awhile and then moved on.
We got to Fort Nelson and dropped off Hans and Yurich. They are a couple of nice guys and we wished them well in their travels. Hopefully they will be able to stay dry. We set up and settled in for the night.

Tomorrow we head for Dawson Creek and the completion of our Alaskan Adventure.
